Gua Sha / Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Work (IASTW)
Releasing muscle tension, restoring movement
What is Gua Sha
Gua sha, also known as instrumental assisted soft tissue work (IASTW) or sometimes referred to as the Graston technique, is a hands on soft tissue therapy that uses specialised stainless steel tools to treat tight, restricted muscles and connective tissue. You might hear it described as “muscle scraping,” but it’s a gentle, controlled technique designed to support the body’s natural healing process.
At Elemental Chiropractic, Dr Yuleena uses a heated stainless steel instrument to further encourage blood flow and tissue relaxation.
It works by applying targeted pressure to areas of tension, helping to break down scar tissue, adhesions, and muscle knots that can contribute to pain, stiffness, and limited movement. At the same time, it stimulates the nervous system to reduce pain sensitivity, while improving circulation to deliver nutrients to the area and support healing. Over time, this helps improve how the soft tissue moves and functions, including better alignment of collagen fibres.
IASTW can be helpful for a range of conditions including:
- Tennis or Golfer's Elbow
- Shin Splints
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Plantar Fasciitis
It’s often used with chiropractic care and exercise, to help you move more freely with greater confidence. Your treatment is always tailored, ensuring the right combination of techniques is used to support your recovery and overall movement.
